Recent Mine fire in Centralia, Columbia County, Pennsylvania, USA.

An outcrop coal seam has been ignited from burning waste in a landfill in 1962. All attempts to extinguish the fire were in vain. The underground fire continued burning.  Soil temperatures of 80 degrees celsius and above and carbon monoxide emissions from the soil developed.
