Recent Coal fire in the city limits of Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

The area located to the north of the city of Mostar contains a former hard coal open pit and subsurface mining site. An open pit lake and terraces at its northern edge still show the impact of mining. The effects of underground coal fires are visible on the surface in terms of smoke, cracks and degradation of vegetation.
All in all the area of investigation is steep, intensely divided and includes cliffy slopes. The site is used as a dumpsite.

Geomagnetic measurements, soil temperature measurements, gas measurements and Infrared measurements have been conducted to map the extents of coal fires. Possible extinctions methods are not yet described in detail. They will depend on the general reconstruction methods of the area and the planned future use.

The fires are not as large as in many other areas suffering from coal fires, but nevertheless need to be extinguished before any future use of the area. As long as those fires are burning there is a continuous danger that they may develop also into larger fires and even ignite burns in the not really known waste deposit as well.
